River Valley Hardwoods

Appalachian Hardwood Lumber.

Specialty sorts, tight specs, and dependable follow-through. From Rift & Quartered White Oak to Oak Rules Walnut — if it comes out of the Appalachian region, we know how to source it.

What we supply

River Valley is built around knowing the material — the species, the grades, and the sorts that matter to your operation. We work green and KD lumber across core Appalachian species, with a strong focus on White Oak and Walnut.

We specialize in the harder-to-find configurations: width sorts, length sorts, rustic grades, Rift & Quartered cuts, and Oak Rules Walnut programs. If your spec is specific, that’s where we do our best work.

Appalachian species we work with

Red Oak

Open-grained with a warm reddish-brown tone. One of the most abundant Appalachian hardwoods — strong, workable, and widely used in flooring, cabinetry, and millwork.

White Oak

Close-grained with distinctive ray fleck and natural tannins that provide good moisture resistance. Harder and heavier than Red Oak. Available plain sawn and in rift and quartered cuts.

Walnut

Rich chocolate-brown heartwood with straight to slightly wavy grain and a fine, even texture. One of North America’s premier furniture and architectural woods.

Cherry

Reddish-brown heartwood that deepens to a warm amber with age and light exposure. Fine, straight grain with smooth machining characteristics and low blunting effect on tools.

Hard Maple

White to cream with a fine, uniform texture and excellent resistance to wear and abrasion. One of the densest domestic hardwoods. Occasional figure includes bird’s eye and curly.

Soft Maple

Similar in appearance to Hard Maple — white to cream with subtle color variation — but lighter and easier to machine. Often shows mineral streaking and understated figure.

Poplar

Light yellow to greenish-gray with straight, even grain and consistent texture. One of the most workable Appalachian hardwoods — stable, easy to machine, and receptive to paint and stain.

Hickory

Extremely dense and hard with bold color contrast between the creamy white sapwood and reddish-brown heartwood. One of the toughest domestic hardwoods — known for shock resistance and hardness.

Ash

Straight-grained with coarse, open texture and a light cream to tan color. Excellent shock resistance and flexibility make it a traditional choice for tool handles, furniture, and flooring.

Yellow Birch

Hard and heavy with a fine, even grain and light reddish-brown heartwood. Good machining characteristics and a clean, consistent appearance. Used in furniture, cabinetry, and interior millwork.

Species represent core Appalachian hardwood offerings. Thickness range is generally 4/4–12/4 depending on species. Grade and sort availability varies.

How we source it

River Valley works directly with sawmills across the Appalachian region to put together programs that match what buyers actually need — on their schedule, at a price that makes sense for everyone in the chain.

That direct relationship means we can pull together specific sorts, respond quickly when something changes, and stand behind what ships without a lot of back-and-forth.

  • Long-standing relationships with regional sawmills let us move fast when a program needs to come together quickly.
  • We can target specific width, length, grade, and color requirements — not just pull from inventory.
  • Pricing is transparent and fair across the supply chain, which keeps our sawmill partners coming back and our buyers getting consistent quality.
  • When specs change or timing shifts, we work it out — not around it.
